The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that, "in the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist, 'the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ ... is truly, really, and substantially contained'" (CCC 1374). In short, the Eucharist is Jesus. It is not merely a symbol.
According to a Pew Research poll, though, only 31% of Catholics actually believe this teaching. In response, the bishops of the United States have launched what they are calling a National Eucharistic Revival. As the movement's website puts it, "The National Eucharistic Revival is a movement to restore understanding and devotion to this great mystery here in the United States by helping us renew our worship of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist."
The Revival is a three year movement. Last year -- from June 2022 to June 2023 -- was the Year of Diocesan Renewal, where programs and events were offered at the diocesan level. In the Diocese of Columbus, the Year of Diocesan Renewal was limited by our time without a bishop. June 11th of 2023, though -- the feast of Corpus Christ ("The Body of Christ") -- begins the Year of Parish Revival, where events and programs are offered at the parish level.
